The Retirement Test Drive

Like most people, I’ve often thought about what I’d like to do in retirement. Danielle & I have talked about how we’d like to travel more after the kids are grown, maybe even live somewhere tropical.

I’ve tried to do everything you’re supposed to do to make these dreams a reality, but in early 2007 I came across a book that made me think about retirement in a different way: The 4-Hour Workweek, by Tim Ferriss.

This book introduced me to the concept of Lifestyle Design, and it’s bursting with revolutionary ideas. One that really struck me:

Why not take the usual 20 – 30-year retirement and redistribute it
throughout life instead of saving it all for the end?

That got me thinking – at the very least, shouldn’t I “test drive” this retirement lifestyle I’m imagining before I spend the best years of my life working for it? By the time I finished the book, I knew I had to do this.

Now, if I could just convince Danielle…
