Rhino Safari, St. Martin

by Marc on December 17, 2008

Since we all enjoyed riding ATVs in Aruba so much, I thought it would be fun to try the aquatic version in St. Martin, zipping around the coast in these 2-person powerboats called Rhinos. OK, I actually booked both excursions at the same time – and it’s a good thing, because after the ATV adventure I was forbidden from choosing any more activities.

We set out from the harbor with Danielle & I each taking one of the kids while our guide led the way past all these million-dollar yachts. That was cool, but when we reached the open water is where the real fun began. We skipped across the waves at high speed, bouncing around in our seats as water splashed in our faces. Woo-hoo!!!

Danielle did a great job keeping up with us (though I’m sure she hated every minute of it), but the other couple in our group kept falling behind. When we occasionally had to stop and wait for them to catch up, I’d do my best to convince everyone how much fun we were having, while Danielle shot me dirty looks and muttered about her plans for retribution.

We stopped for some snorkeling, but just as in Antigua, the water conditions were not the best. Plus, I had forgotten to pack our snorkel masks and the ones we borrowed from the tour operator kept fogging up.

Oh, well – the ride back was a little smoother, since we were riding in the same direction as the current instead of against it. We zoomed past an old shipwreck and a few beaches before returning to the harbor.

I thought it was a blast – one of my favorite activities of all our cruises. Danielle & the kids thought it was…well, not quite as bad as the ATVs.

Cool – maybe next we’ll try ziplines. :)
