El Calafate

The next stop on our tour of Patagonia was the laid-back town of El Calafate (which, in case you were wondering is Spanish for “The Calafate”).

Dry, windy, and much hotter than I expected, this town on the shores of Lago Argentina is the gateway for exploring Los Glaciares National Park, home to one of the few advancing glaciers in the world. I’ll get to that later.

We chose to stay at the America del Sur Hostel, and were pretty happy with the choice. We had our own room with bunk beds and a private bath – not the most comfortable, but adequate.

Situated on a hill overlooking the town and the lake, the place had killer views.

They even cook a pretty mean barbecue every night, along with some awesome vegetables.

But the best part of America del Sur is the staff – incredibly friendly and helpful. They made all our tour reservations for us, gave us all the information we could possibly need – even gave the girls a few juggling lessons.

We spent a whole week in Calafate, far longer than necessary to see the sights – but hey, we like to take it slow…

That lake is awesome! I’m not sure I’d want to leave theAmerica Del Sur Hostel w/ those views, skies & sunsets.
