I really enjoyed Buenos Aires. It was almost like a mini break from travel being in the two-bedroom apartment and having a kitchen. It’s by far the least touristy place we have been to yet and felt like living downtown in any major US city – aside from the whole very, very few speak English.
You walk everywhere you can, hail a taxi right outside your apartment, or take the subway. We didn’t end up using the bus system any because it takes exact change in coins. Coins are hard to come by in BA and I have heard you can buy a bag $18 bag of coins on the black market for $20. (Argentine pesos, that is.)
Another interesting thing about money is nobody wants to give you change. You can watch the person in front of you pay and the money go into the register but you go to pay your $60 tab with a $100 and they will ask you if you have something smaller. Every time.
It was a little hard to get used to restaurants being closed between 3:00 and 8:00. No dinner at 6:00 for us. Going to bed at 11:00 (or later) and not getting up until 9:00 became our new routine.
