Ushuaia proudly calls itself “the City at the End of the World”. Of course, if you get out a globe (or Google Earth) you’ll probably notice that:
- the earth is a sphere, and therefore doesn’t really have an “end”,
- there’s still quite a bit of territory further south, including a pretty good-sized continent.
Nevertheless, you’ll find the words “Fin del Mundo” everywhere. There’s the Train at the End of the World,
The Post Office at the End of the World,
And even the Popcorn Cart at the End of the World.
You might as well go along with it.
The city itself reminds me a lot of towns in Alaska like Skagway & Ketchikan. It’s gorgeous down here, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and a picturesque harbor.
It’s also very touristy – a popular cruise ship stop this time of year. Everything’s expensive, including the food. I was almost always hungry.
We stayed at the Hotel Austral, a nice quiet place with great views.
The weather was a little rainy, a little cold – kind of a welcome change from hot, sticky Buenos Aires. I hadn’t really made any plans as far as activities, but I was sure we could find something to do.
