Peke the Guanaco

Close relatives of the llamas and alpacas we saw in Peru, guanacos are all over Peninsula Valdes. Almost all are wild, roaming freely among the sheep ranches and often darting across the road in front of passing cars.

We did meet a domesticated one, though, during our tour of the penguin colony at Estancia San Lorenzo:

Peke was rescued as a baby and raised on the estancia, and she doesn’t realize how easily she could jump the fences.

We weren’t allowed to get too close – Peke is a spitter – but she still made quite an impression on the girls.

During the car ride back to our hotel, Hannah made up a catchy little song about Peke – which has been getting stuck in my head ever since.

So, I’ve decided to share it with all of you. Have a listen:

Now it can get stuck in your head, too!
