I suppose no trip to Tokyo would be complete without a weekend visit to Harajuku, the self-proclaimed epicenter of Tokyo’s youth culture.
It was a weird scene, for sure. We emerged from the subway into a sea of people, with the odd Tamagotchi character thrown in the mix.
Most of the people here were either teenagers or tourists, or both. There are tons of shops full of all things hip and cool, but we didn’t feel like braving the crowds, so we headed toward the park, where the freaky teens hang out.
For some reason, I expected these kids to be more extroverted – mostly they just hung together in shy little clumps with their backs to everyone, guarded by a few really creepy old guys.
However, some were willing to pose for pictures,
and the “free hugs” gang was anything but shy.
We’ve found the people-watching to be great throughout this city, but Harajuku definitely takes the cake! You can find more pictures on our Flickr page.

Did y’all take them up on their “FREE HUGS” offer?? I don’t think I could have resister the upside down sign.
oops … I should have said “resisted” not resister. The kids interrupted me before I could check and hit submit.
