Frequently Asked Questions
Whenever we tell people about our plans, they usually ask some or all of these questions:
“Are you kidding?”
No.
“Are you crazy?”
Yeah, crazy like a fox!
And not a crazy fox either, a sane one.
“Are you rich?”
Not really. We don’t have a trust fund, and we didn’t win the lottery either.
“How are you paying for this?”
Well, we’re accepting donations!
Seriously, we’ve been saving up for it. Also, we’ll be using the proceeds from selling all our stuff. Oh, and credit cards. Lots of credit cards!
“Are you really selling everything?”
No. Just the house, the cars, the furniture, the appliances - and all the other things we don’t really use. Wanna buy some stuff?
“Are you really keeping only 4 suitcases worth of stuff?”
OK, not exactly. But “Four suitcases, a couple of carry-ons, a camera bag and a few boxes in storage” didn’t seem like a good title for the blog.
“Why are you taking a bunch of cruises?”
The short answer is because we really like cruising!
We figure a lot of other RTW travelers will say we’re “wussing out”, and that taking a bunch of cruises isn’t really traveling. And they’re partly right - but we’re not taking this trip to impress anyone. We’ll talk more about the role of cruising in our adventure later.
“Do you get a huge discount on the cruises, since Danielle’s a travel agent?”
We wish!
Nope, although we do receive some commission, we’re paying the same as any other passenger. Of course, if one of the cruise lines approached us about a sponsorship deal, we’d probably sell out in a heartbeat!
“But Marc, what about your career?”
Right, what about it? I don’t hate my job, but I’ve been doing it for 15 years now and I’m ready to take a break, to focus my time other things that are more important to me. It’s not like I can never go back.
“How will you educate the kids?”
Everyone seems to think this is such a huge obstacle. Maybe we’re naive, but we really don’t see what the big deal is - we think they’re gonna learn a lot more on this trip than they would sitting in their 5th and 2nd grade classrooms. We’ll see how it goes, and we’ll post a lot about it here.
