Reflections on Japan

On our last day in Tokyo, little flurries of falling cherry blossoms were everywhere. Just like the sakura season, our visit here was beautiful and all too brief.

Tokyo wore us out. It’s just so big and there’s so much to see and do – in the end, we had to leave a lot of stuff out. I’d definitely like to come back here, when I have more money to spend and better grasp of the Japanese language.

As we boarded our flight for Beijing, the other passengers (mostly Chinese) were pushing and shoving their way onto the plane, chattering loudly as they tried to cram their oversized carryons into the bins. A stark contrast to the refined manners of the Japanese, for sure.

I got the feeling that as foreign as Japan had been, China was going to be a whole lot stranger.

We are still many months away, but the prospect of traveling to the Far East makes our minds reel. Not knowing anything about the language? Hope we’re not in too much trouble. But hard times or not, it must have been incredible to have experienced a culture so wholly different from your own.
