Feeling Like a Local

by Marc on November 28, 2008

We’ve always enjoyed cruising. It’s a really easy vacation, the scenery is fantastic, and there’s always something good to eat not more than a few hundred feet away.

On this trip we get to visit 20+ islands (most of them more than once) while only having to pack our suitcases 3 times. Pretty awesome.

The only downside: since we only visit these places for 8 hours (or less), we don’t really have enough time to experience them in detail. I’ve often sat on the deck of a cruise ship as we sail away, watching the islanders close up shop in our wake. I’ve wondered what it would be like to stay behind and see what these places are like after the cruise ships leave.

Now we have some idea – we’ve seen how the ships get almost eerily quiet at the end of one cruise, only to become a whirlwind of activity just an hour later when the passengers for the next voyage flood in.

I guess you could say the only islands we’ve really gotten to know are the ships themselves.. Once we’ve spent a couple of weeks on one, we feel less like tourists and more like locals – making friends with some of the crew and hanging out in our favorite spots while the other passengers try to figure out what to do next and how to get there.

It took us a little while to get used to Emerald Princess – it was sooo different from our previous ship – but now we’re right at home again, feeling like locals.

Too bad it’ll be time to leave soon.
