Impressions of Cusco

I don’t know what I expected it to be like.  Turns out its very dirty.  I am sure it being the rainy season doesn’t help things but I bet it isn’t all sparkely clean in the dry season either.  Hundreds of stray dogs (watch your step!) roam the city during the day.  Even the kids quit saying, “PUPPY!” after the first few days.  One of our tour drivers said there are cats too but they are afraid of the dogs and don’t come out until night.

To be more fair, I should say the streets and “sidewalks” are dirty (ok and maybe the outside of many buildings).  And then hidden behind a wooden door scarred and weathered with peeling paint will be a beautiful courtyard.

I happen to think Cusco is the most touristy city I have ever visited. People are constantly approaching you selling their wares.  Anything from paintings to jewelry, hats and dolls, to ponchos and umbrellas at the first sign of rain even the tops of spray bottles (didn’t quite understand this one) and boxes of q-tips.

I am surprised that with all the restaurants around the city how unvaried the menus really are.  Almost every restaurant has the same soups, chicken dishes, trout, and pizza.

I would venture a guess that 80% of the cars in this town are taxis.  All of them with working horns.

The preferred mode of transportation appears to be VW’s. Since it’s a tourist town, guess there aren’t any outward appearances of dislike for Americans.

Don’t guess y’all will be moving there anytime soon.
