Peninsula Valdes is home to a number of large sea lion colonies which dot the eastern shore, and during our visit, this year’s new pups were just beginning to test out the water – the perfect time to catch one of South America’s most unique wildlife spectacles.
You see, Peninsula Valdes is also home to a pod of orcas (killer whales), which love to eat tasty sea lion pups. And at Punta Norte at the northeast corner of the peninsula, they’ve developed a technique of catching them where they actually come up on shore. You can see video of it here.
Of course, they don’t do this every day – the sea and wind conditions have to be just right. We visited Punta Norte twice during high tide, but the orcas didn’t show. Oh, well – we still got to watch the sea lions.
The park rangers told us that a Discovery Channel camera crew would be spending the entire month of March here to film the orcas – they’ll probably have better luck than we did.

At first I thought you had found another “tasty” dish to try.
My thought too was “sea lion”–oh yuck!
Oh yeah Sea pups with cilantro. hmmmmmm – Those Orcas got it going on!
I’ve seen this very spot on National Geographic before. It’s like you’re w/ the crew being down there. What an incredible adventure.
