I think the Japanese might just be the most polite people on earth. Even when they’re rushing to work or packing into subway cars, everyone here just seems so well-mannered.
Maybe all these signs I’ve noticed at various places have something to do with it:
Of course, I can’t read the one above, but the message about subway behavior is pretty clear.
Now take a look at the next one, on a bus stop in Harajuku. Note the strange diagram and gigantic cigarette, along with the passive-aggressive tone:
And this sign found in every subway station always cracked me up:
I’m not sure exactly why.
