Slowing Down in Hoi An

Hoi An was a refreshing change of pace from the frenzy of Saigon. The old town along the river gets the old-world charm thing just right, with perfectly aged buildings housing a handful of great restaurants, some art & souvenir shops, and about 500 tailors.

Surrounding the historic old town are several blocks of slightly more modern hotels and shops,

along with about 25,00o more tailors. Apparently the thing to do here is buy clothing.

We really enjoyed the quieter pace of life in this town, and loved staying at the Southern Hotel and Villas on the outskirts. The air conditioning and swimming pool were a welcome relief from the relentless heat.

I’m pretty sure the staff at our hotel thought we were crazy, spending most of our time hanging out at the hotel and turning down all their sightseeing tours.

But this was exactly what we wanted – we had seen all the beaches and ruins we wanted to, and were savoring this bit of calm before the coming storm of what we’ve started calling “re-entry”

The people in this town are super-nice, and the restaurants are actually quite good. Our kind of place.

We’ve been collecting lots of tips from fellow traveler for our itinerary in Asia, and Hoi An keeps coming up as a nice city to explore, and a decent place to eat. Love your photos, and the looks of relaxation at the pool!
